Kalkhoff consistently voted among the "best electric bikes"

Kalkhoff Aggatu & Pro-Connect

Kalkhoff ReviewPrice: From £1,295   Rating: 5/5   Verdict: "Smashing German roadsters"

As a general rule, the best drive system for an electric bike is the crank drive . In spring 2011, the Panasonic crank drive is by far the most popular type, although in the next few months this is bound to change, with new systems from Daum, Bosch and Yamaha.

Arguably the best crank drive machines are the Kalkhoff Aggatu and Pro-Connect. The Agattu is an excellent mid-range electric bike - keenly priced, reasonably well equipped, and more or less multi-purpose. Whether you live in the flat Netherlands or mountainous Swiss Alps, this bike will suit you well enough. The Pro-Connect is altogether sportier. With three power settings, you can opt for 50+ miles at modest speed, or a much perkier 40 miles on the 'High' setting. Prices rose considerably last year, but they've dropped back since, making these German/Japanese machines great value against the more expensive Chinese bikes. Panasonic's own 270Wh battery has now been replaced with a range of three sizes (212Wh, 318Wh and 486Wh) produced for Derby Cycles in German. As we'd hoped, these new batteries have been introduced with a two-year guarantee, but we're hoping battery life will be well in excess of this. Watch out too for the BionX direct drive version, the Image B27. This is well priced against the similar Trek models and offers regenerative braking and near silent operation, albeit with limited hill-climbing abilities. At the sportier end of the scale, Kalkhoff are also quietly selling a couple of top-end 25mph bikes in the three grand region. Great fun, but not strictly speaking road legal in the UK. Still, who cares? We seriously need our electric bike laws reviewed... why should the Germans and Swiss be allowed 'Sports Class' entertainment? Cast off your chains and man the barricades!

Low, medium and high power alike, the Kalkhoff bikes provide stylish, practical, economic and effective transport

Kalkhoff Pro-Connect

"At just over 20kg (44lb) and with the frame geometry of a sporty 700c-wheeled racer, Kalkhoff's Pro Connect is one of the lightest and highest quality electric bikes around. It rides fast and goes a ground-breakingly long way on a single charge"

Kalkhoff Agattu

"This Kalkhoff Agattu is just about the best electric bicycle you can buy in the world right now. It uses a Panasonic Pedelec system (which senses how hard you’re pedaling and adjusts power assist accordingly), has a range of up to 140 kms and will charge up in 4-5 hours. What makes it special? Well according to this review it seems to be the combination of low weight, robustness and performance when compared with the rest of the field."

"When this new Kalkhoff Agattu model was announced, I thought that at last it might be the long awaited successor.
I was not to be disappointed, as you will see."

"The ride is great and you quickly become addicted to the motor's liquid power. The crank-drive motor really is the way to go in terms of efficiency and seamless, intuitive power delivery. They say you feel bionic when you ride this bike and it really is true. I have ridden 40+ miles in a day and have yet to top out the battery's capacity. The Tasman Wave frame with its practical accoutrements (chain guard, fenders, built-in wheel lock) allow for comfortable commuting in office attire. I personally think that Kalkhoff makes the best electric bike available today in the U.S. Whether you want to get more exercise, do your part to limit climate change, or just enjoy the great outdoors, you can't go wrong with an electric bike. Happy riding, and let's hope we all see more e-bike riders out there!"

"My new Kalkhoff Pro Connect Sport allows me to commute more often...(22 miles one way). I am pleased to say 10 amp hours is ample power to make the ride fun and fast, cutting my commute time from 100 minutes to less than 70 minutes regardless of headwind. I bought a second charger (one for home and one for work) and am now commuting 3 days/wk vs. 1/wk. before since I’m not so tired from 44 miles of riding. The Kalkhoff makes everything seem closer!"

"Last month at the Tapai International Cycle Show, two Kalkhoff e-bikes models won ExtraEnergy awards in the Best Pedelec category. The Pro Connect won Best Easy Pedelec, one of the most hotly contended awards.
The Kalkhoff Pro Connect impressed with its excellent balance between handling, fittings and motor. This is a marriage of tradition with power. It feels very much like a bicycle and the consistently very high values achieved in the riding test, make this Pedelec the ideal vehicle for daily use in the city environment."

Promovec Electric Bike Testimonials

For 33 years now I’ve used a bicycle around town, where I live and work. The bicycle came into its own about 12 years ago when I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. While I had to restrict my walking, use of the bicycle became even more essential for getting to and from work and around town. A couple of years ago however, I began to have difficulties cycling up hills or against the wind and I had to stop using the bicycle for a while. I purchased the Provomec electric bike six months ago and everything has been transformed. Apart from using the bike for getting around town I’ve also started going on Sunday cycles, up by the new canal cycle pathway and down the Phoenix park. Overall this new bike has brought great improvement to my lifestyle, helping me to get around without causing joint pain and also giving me some vital exercise.

Promovec Element Review

Promovec ReviewThe Promovec Element has given me back my independence!

I have ridden a bike for many years but recently had found it painful to pedal due to arthritic spine and knees. I had to depend on the family to drive me to the shops as I cannot walk very far.

Now that I have the Element I can come and go as I please! Riding up steep hills is effortless and the bike is very comfortable.

I'm so glad I decided to invest in this super, super bicycle and would happily recommend it.

Just to let you the Promovec is brilliant. Having not been on a bike for thirty years, I managed nearly eight miles yesterday!!!! And I am amazed how easy it was. Legs were fine but the bottom is a bit delicate today! I’ll certainly be promoting these bikes and your company to anyone who wants to avail of the cycle to work scheme".
